Fruit Islands

Fruit Islands From: Ralston
Introduced in 1987

Fruit Islands was described on the box as a "new sweetened cereal with real apple bits! All natural cherry, orange, lemon & other fruit flavors." The cereal's big Hawaiian mascot was named King Ayumayma.

In its first television commercial, Fruit Islands cereal was described like this: "Fruit Islands has real apple bits on every island and great cherry, orange and lemon taste to please King Ayumayma." (Note that cereal pieces were referred to as islands.) That commercial featured the following short jingle:

"We've got the fruit... the fruit taste
We've got the fruit in new Fruit Islands cereal."

Known premiums: Fruit Scented Pen with Game Map (free inside), a roll of Life Savers candy (free inside) and Two .3 Ounce Boxes of Nerds candy (free inside).

1987 Find Fruit Islands Sweepstakes Commercial

1987 Find Fruit Islands Sweepstakes Commercial

King Ayumayma and Hee Hee, a curly-haired shirtless friend, are fishing in a boat just off the shores of Fruit Islands.

King Ayumayma: No fish, he he...

Hee Hee: But there's lots of Fruit Islands cereal.

King Ayumayma: Ayumayma! Ayumayma!

Suddenly, their boat speeds through the ocean. It is being dragged miles off course by a fish on their line. The boat finally stops and the king lifts a small fish from the water.

King Ayumayma: Puny fish.

Hee Hee: Where is Fruit Islands?!

Both men scream.

Announcer: You can help the king and Hee Hee get home in the Find Fruit Islands Sweepstakes. Use the game pen and map in specially marked boxes. Millions will enter. Thousands will win. Watches, stereos, TVs and more. One will win a treasure of toys!

King Ayumayma: Ayumayma! Ayumayma!

I love this cereal also! I was in a car accident in 1991 and I lost most of my memory, but I remember the Fruit Islands Cereal! Ah Yumma Yumma!!!! That was and still is my favorite cereal! I heard the makers of Cookie Crisp made it.

You may learn more about me and the accident I went through @ the Web site. Achieving Your Promises How To Reverse Your Circumstances And Realize Your Dreams is the title of the book.

This was a good cereal, it had the consistency of cookie crisp, but had a fruit flavor. Glad to see the commercial though.

I love this cereal. Too, like the sereis Alf, which ended with a cliffhanger as Alf was surrounded by federal agents in the middle of a field, this cereal's discontinuation marked a similar cliffhanger and left a void in my heart. King Ayumayuma was adrift at sea or something, or perhaps taken captive by some people from another island, and the commerical was 'To Be Continued', but they never did because they discontinued the cereal! I blame this lingering preoccupation with King Ayumayuma's persoanl well-being on most of my life's misfortunes and bad mistakes.

I finally found evidence of this cereal. People thought I was crazy for saying Yama Yama had to do with a cereal from the 80's!!!

I remember having Fruit Islands cereal when I was 5 years old but haven't had it since it discontinued. I loved it so much that I can still remember the taste even after so many years. I wish they'd make this again, I'd buy it!!
